Flytram

One seamless journey from the valley to the hillside.

Development of the design language of a luxury residential truck

The Flytram is a tram-train system that uses existing road-rail networks in the cities and accesses poorly connected suburbs with ropeways. This vehicle is a hybrid between a tram and a cable car. It aims to lessen the number of transfers and costs, resulting in a more competitive traffic system. The passenger cabin can be connected to the autonomous rail bogie at the bottom, and a ropeway-connected gondola arm on the top.

solution

The exterior design of the residential truck was designed in line with the Dembell team's creed, brand strategy and thoughtful technical innovations. We designed a sophisticated, timeless look that reflects Dembell's vision of creating the world's first luxury inland yacht — completely unknown in the world of motorhomes

The product design won the renowned Red Dot design award in 2022 and 2023.

System

The aim is to reduce the number of transfers and to extend the network inexpensively to the less accessible agglomeration. The concept required the design of a interchange station.  The interchange station is where an automated process is used to transfer the cabins from the ropeway to the rail bogie. The loading and coupling of the cabins takes minimal time. The main purpose of the system is to eliminate the inconvenience of  transferring.  The interconnected cabins do not obstruct other traffic in the city. The cabins can thus be used on existing busy lines.

Exteriour

I deliberately avoided train/ tram design archetypes and opted for the clean aesthetic of consumer electronics. The cabins’ shape looks harmonious and balanced in both modes with the gondola arm and the autonomous bogie as well. The latter houses the sensors for self-driving. The Flytram's autonomous bogie has been designed to meet European pedestrian safety protection standards.

Interiour

Developing the interior and exterior simultaneously, resulted in a well-thought-out concept for the inside that strives for symmetry. It can accommodate up to 36 passengers, 16 seated and 20 standing + 2 wheelchairs or prams. The central part of the passenger compartment is barrier-free. The displays provide passengers with travel information and they are suitable for advertising.
